Improving Ruff Lives

In a perfect world, every dog would have a home, and every home would have a dog. For the G/L team, this world became a reality, even if for just one Friday. Playing out a dog lover’s dream, we had the opportunity to come together for a heart-felt trip outside the agency’s walls.

Our crew at Geile/Leon was excited to join one another and give back to the St. Louis community by spending a day at the Stray Rescue main shelter located at 2320 Pine Street. The afternoon was spent assisting the staff of the non-profit organization in their valiant efforts to keep these homeless companions off the streets and placed in healthy, happy environments. With over 100 doggie residents at the facility, there was plenty of work to go around. (more…)

THE Olympic Brand: London 2012

It seems the theme for Summer 2012 revolves around breaking through records. From the record-breaking temperatures here across the U.S., to the world-record performances across the Pond, people are taking notice.

However, some Americans and global Olympic watchers alike may not be as aware of the attempt to break from the record-setting handcuffs that have been placed on brands, athletes, and Olympics patrons by the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games.

As countries and countrymen across the globe have prepared themselves for the irreplaceable two-week span, the LOCOG will be keeping a close eye.

This year, the LOCOG has put into place a form of “Brand Police.” These “Police” are currently patrolling the shops and streets of London to try to prevent and punish any attempt at Guerilla marketing tactics by storeowners, athletes, and/or patrons. But seriously, Brand Police? It may seem justified, due to the recent value of the Olympics brand that Brand Finance has placed at $47.6 billion dollars. Coincidentally, worth more than all of its major sponsors—Coca-Cola, Acer, ATOS, Dow Chemical, General Electric, McDonalds, Omega, Panasonic, Proctor & Gamble, Samsung and Visa—combined. Ideally, what brand wouldn’t want a chance to take home a piece of that brand-exposure gold? (more…)

G/L’s Griffen: A man of renaissance and reincarnation

“I have a long history of working with my hands,” says Marcus Griffen, Web Designer and Programmer at St. Louis ad agency Geile/Leon Marketing Communications since August of 2011.

Just spend a few minutes with the soft-spoken, lanky 30-year-old, and you’ll quickly discover that his skill set is far more comprehensive than just being “handy.”

Born and raised in Edwardsville, Illinois, Marcus spent his childhood like a lot of kids do, working with his hands and trying to figure out how stuff works. His relentless curiosity and talent led to work as a mechanic, and later, a fabricator for an industrial automation facility.

He attended college at SIU-Edwardsville, and then grad school at SIU-Carbondale as a philosophy major, but that was short-lived. Marcus headed back to Edwardsville to pursue a degree in graphic design. While there, he took several classes in sculpture, which for Marcus became much more than just a required course. (more…)

Weighing In: Advertisers Are Getting Fat at the Expense of Kids

One of the worst health issues for American kids is O – B – E – S – I – T – Y.   And we marketers feed right into it.

How could that be? We bike to work, run marathons, and quaff light beer and Skinny Girl Margaritas. But what we serve up to our clients and their customers is the problem. (more…)

How Fast Can Your Brand Build Momentum?

How Fast Can Your Brand Build Momentum?

My yard is a mess.

It’s been that way for going on a year. I’ll occasionally head out on a weekend to mow, trim, work a flowerbed, spread some mulch. Then, the following weekend, it will rain or I’ll have a game to attend for my kids or time to spend with friends.

My landscaping never really gains momentum.

Are you doing the same with your marketing?

Similar to that landscaping, it takes time to build a brand. I call it Brand Velocity. The faster and more consistently you can touch your customers, the quicker they move through the branding stages—awareness, affinity, opinion and finally advocacy. This speed is a function of your bandwidth—the more time you can spend on your marketing efforts, the bigger the return. (more…)

Keeping ideas fresh for long-term clients

Nothing fails like success. Long term clients often fixate on past successes—ads that generated great reponses, animated banner ads that go viral, tradeshow booths that were the center of attention. Who can blame them? The creative was compelling, the strategy was on target and the results showed up. With so much past success, who can possibly embrace the future? Who … well possibly your target audience. That’s the funny thing—they’ve already moved on. They are looking for the next big thing. And it is our job to make sure our clients don’t get too comfortable with their old creative. Because that past success can spell f-a-i-l-u-r-e.

But it’s not that easy for our clients. They know a sure thing, and it’s not that new creative you’ve just presented. Unknowingly (I hope), they keep pushing the creative back into a template of the old creative, and everything starts to look and feel the same. (more…)

Trade Show PR: Old School Guerilla Tactics Producing Great Results

Industry trade shows—the “coming out” party where manufacturers put on their Sunday Best to show off their latest and greatest—are fantastic opportunities for companies to spend time in the spotlight. And most of them put their efforts into drawing potential customers to their show booth. Nothing wrong with that.

But there’s another group of folks attending these shows that warrant serious consideration by exhibitors: Industry Media—reporters, editors, publishers and bloggers whose influence reaches far beyond the trade show walls. Reaching out to them with something newsworthy can really pay off. (more…)
